Retained By A Separate Authority
Description
A catalogue card recording a later attempt to summarise the surviving manuscript following repeated examination. The typed description has been supplemented by manuscript annotations questioning several of its principal conclusions, including the proposed date and attribution. The record appears to represent a final administrative assessment and withdrawal from circulation.
Provenance
Preserved with the associated catalogue material and bearing numerous signs of institutional revision. Several annotations appear to have been added after the card had entered routine circulation, suggesting that the catalogue remained under intermittent review before being withdrawn from active use.
Physical Description
Standard ruled catalogue card with typed description, manuscript annotations in graphite and ink, institutional stamps and accession markings. Multiple hands are represented. Several additions directly contradict the typed record, while later annotations indicate that further examination was considered unlikely to resolve the remaining uncertainties.
Notes
The card represents the final surviving stage in the known catalogue history of the manuscript. No subsequent revisions have been found. Its concluding annotations suggest that further attempts at classification had been formally discontinued without reaching a satisfactory conclusion.
Musical Interpretation
This recording explores the point at which investigation gives way to acceptance. Musical ideas are not resolved so much as allowed to settle into increasingly stable relationships, as though successive attempts at revision have gradually exhausted the available possibilities. The resulting structure favours clarity over discovery, allowing earlier ambiguities to coexist without demanding explanation.
Independent layers maintain their individual identities throughout the work, yet together form a coherent whole whose order emerges only in retrospect. Rather than pursuing definitive conclusions, the music reflects the catalogue's final position: that understanding may remain incomplete while still permitting the surviving fragments to be meaningfully preserved.
