Papers Relating To An Unattributed Journal

Papers Relating To An Unattributed Journal

Papers Relating To An Unattributed Journal brings together a collection of documents and recordings concerned with observation, classification and the preservation of incomplete information. Across the collection, administrative records, catalogue material and surviving pages from an unattributed nineteenth-century journal accompany a series of recordings whose relationships emerge gradually through repeated examination.

Rather than presenting individual compositions as isolated pieces, the collection is constructed from a small number of independent musical ideas that combine in different ways across the recordings. Familiar material is continually encountered in new contexts, allowing larger structures to emerge through accumulation rather than linear development.

As with the documents themselves, certainty remains elusive. Recurring themes, annotations and numerical references suggest connections without resolving them completely, inviting the listener to move between the surviving records and the music in much the same way that an archivist pieces together the history of an incomplete collection.
